We are proud to make our own chocolate at our bakery in South Australia. The ingredients that go into our chocolate include
Cocoa Liquor which is the most important ingredient in giving our chocolate taste. Our cocoa liquor comes from cocoa beans grown in South East Asia and Fair Trade farms in West Africa.
Cocoa Butter is the fat extracted from the cocoa mass. Cocoa butter is melted and mixed with the other ingredients to give a smooth consistency, and gives the familiar melt in the mouth texture. Our cocoa butter comes from farms in South East Asia.
Milk solids including milk powder and butter oil give our Tim Tam original chocolate its distinctive milky chocolate quality. As the name implies all milk chocolate is made with some milk in the recipe. All our milk ingredients are sourced from Australian and New Zealand farms. Our Tim Tam Classic Dark chocolate also contains a small amount of milk and butter oil to give it a more smooth and creamy taste, so we do not recommend consumption by those sensitive to dairy.
Over half of our sugar comes from Queensland with the remaining sugar sourced from Thailand.
Our flour is milled from wheat sourced from across Australia including the Darling Downs, Moree, the Riverina and South Australia.
Arnott’s ANZ is proudly committed to sustainable practices for palm cultivation and in conjunction with our palm oil supplier, uses 100% traceable and certified sustainable supply palm oil, involving no deforestation.
All the palm oil used in Australian made Tim Tam biscuits is sourced from the Malaysian peninsular, from land which is specifically used to produce palm oil. It is not an area experiencing deforestation and no orang-utans are found wild on this peninsular.
Ingredients for texture
Emulsifiers: Soy Lecithin and E476
These are used to help blend ingredients together and form a smooth and even chocolate coating. Lecithin also known as E322 is derived from non GMO soy beans. E476, also known as Polyglycerol polyricinoleate or PGPR is derived from castor bean oil.
Baking Soda or Raising Agent E500
is used to leaven the Tim Tam biscuit. The baking soda is mixed into the dough to allow the biscuit to rise and become light and crispy when baked.
Ingredients for Flavour
Across our Tim Tam range, we use a combination of natural and artificial flavours. We use natural flavours where optimal but in some cases artificial flavours are better at carrying the characteristic flavour of the biscuit.
1-Natural flavours are extracted or derived from natural sources. Such as plants, dairy and other proteins.
2-Artificial flavours are made from highly purified chemicals carefully blended by expert flavorists.
Ingredients for Colour
We use colours across our range that include natural and artificial colours. The artificial colours used include E102, E110, E129 and E133. We also use Caramel 150c or bakers caramel which is derived from burnt sugar.
The natural colours in Tim Tam include
1-Annatto E160b – a yellow to orange colour made from the seed of the achiote plant.
2-Carmine or Cochineal E120 – a red colour derived from insects. It is commonly used in many commercially available foods.
3-Beet Red E162, – a colour derived from beetroot.
4-Paprika Extract E160c – an orange colour derived from paprika.
We are working hard to remove artificial colours from the range. By the end of 2016, the Tim Tam Chocolicious range will no longer contain artificial colours.
Other Important things to know
Health Star Rating
Tim Tam achieves a low score on the health star rating system because of its combination of rich chocolate, cream filling and sweet biscuit ingredients. Like all treats it should be enjoyed as part of a well-balanced diet.
At Arnott’s, we’re doing as much as is technically possible to ensure
products made in our Australian bakeries do not contain genetically modified ingredients. For example across our bakeries we work with our suppliers to ensure all the canola oil, corn and wheat we buy comes from farms dedicated to growing non-genetically modified crops.
Small amounts of alcohol based flavours like vanilla essence are added to our Tim Tam biscuits. While almost all the alcohol is evaporated during the baking process there is a possibility that trace amounts may be present in some of our biscuits.
We also make Tim Tam at our Indonesian bakery
Tim Tam made in our Indonesian bakery is manufactured for sale in South East Asia and other export markets only. We do not import Tim Tam from Indonesia to Australia or New Zealand, but you may occasionally find them in some smaller supermarkets and discount chains where they have been parallel imported by independent distributors. All Australian made Tim Tams say “Made in Australia” next to the address on the back of the pack.
